The role of a Radiation Therapist

A Radiation Therapist, or RT(T) is a key member of the radiation oncology team that is credentialed by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) and licensed by the State of New York. Radiation Therapists use high energy rays to treat cancer patients. RT(T)s are responsible for operating the linear accelerator, delivering dose and recording the process. The role of a radiation therapist is deeply rewarding, as they are the members of the radiation oncology team that treats the patient very day. Radiation Therapists may work in academic medical centers, health care institutions, hospitals, cancer centers and more.

The day to day role of a Radiation Therapist includes:

  • Providing direct patient care by delivering therapeutic radiation treatments to cancer patients and providing emotional support and encouragement throughout a patient’s treatment

  • Operating machinery named linear accelerators to deliver radiation therapy (external beam radiation therapy) and assisting with brachytherapy procedures

  • Establishing relationships and providing support for patients; RT(T)s may see a patient every day for multiple weeks

  • Continuing education, conducting research and publishing to advance the field and profession of radiation therapy

Governance Hierarchy

The American Society of Radiologic Technologists (ASRT) is the premier professional association of people working in medical imaging and radiation therapy. An affiliate is an organized group of radiologic technologists who live in a specific region or state. Affiliates sign a valid charter agreement with the ASRT and share a common mission and purpose with the ASRT. Affiliates provide services for their members, such as conferences, grass-roots networking, social networking, leadership opportunities and community awareness in support of local radiologic technologists.

The Radiation Therapy Association of New York State is a proud subordinate affiliate of the American Society of Radiologic Technologists through the New York State Society of Radiologic Sciences.
